Why We Still Send Christmas Cards

in a world of WhatsApps, emails, and emoji-filled messages, it might seem like Christmas cards have had their day.

In fact, sending a Christmas card today might be one of the most thoughtful, meaningful gestures you can make – for your loved ones, and for causes that need your support.

Let’s take a quick look at where it all started, and why this simple tradition is still full of heart.

The History of the Christmas Card

Back in 1843, a man called Sir Henry Cole, a civil servant who helped found the Victoria and Albert Museum, was swamped with Christmas letters and wanted a quicker way to stay in touch. His solution? The world’s first Christmas card – printed, hand-coloured, and sent out with one cheerful message for everyone.

He asked his artist friend John Callcott Horsley to design a card. The illustration on the card featured a large family gathered around a table raising a toast, with images on either side of people helping the poor. A beautiful mix of celebration and compassion. About a thousand were printed and sold for a shilling each which was expensive for the time.

Christmas cards caught on quickly and by the 1860’s publishers were printing cards with a range of different designs. By the 1870’s they had become a popular British tradition.

So, Why Bother Sending Cards Today?

Christmas cards are so much more than a tradition. They show that you care and that you have taken time to think of someone.

Here’s why we think sending cards still matters (and maybe matters even more than it used to):

1.Cards are Personal in a Digital World

A Christmas card is something you can hold, stick on the mantelpiece, or hang across the living room. It doesn’t vanish into a notification tray, it stays. Many of us treasure our cards, holding on to them for years to come.

2. Cards Connect Us

Whether it’s a friend you haven’t seen in years or a neighbour who lives alone, receiving a card makes people feel seen and remembered. That’s powerful.

3. It Makes a Difference

When you buy from a not-for-profit like us, you’re not just sending a card, you’re supporting amazing charities across the UK and beyond.

Every card helps fund vital work in health, community support, environmental protection, animal welfare, children’s services and  much more.

4. It Keeps the Spirit of Giving Alive

Just like that first card in 1843 showed people raising a glass and helping others, today’s charity Christmas cards keep that same balance: celebrate joyfully, give generously.
