Celebrating Hanukkah: Light, Joy and Connection
As the nights draw in and twinkling lights begin to fill our homes and streets, it’s time to celebrate one of the most beautiful festivals of the season – Hanukkah, the Jewish Festival of Lights.
Observed over eight days and nights, Hanukkah celebrates the miracle of the Temple oil that lasted eight days instead of one, symbolising hope, faith and resilience. It’s a time to gather with loved ones, light the menorah, share food, exchange gifts, and reflect on the power of light over darkness.
Hanukkah Traditions in the UK
Across the UK, Jewish families celebrate Hanukkah in many meaningful ways:
- Lighting the menorah: Each night, one additional candle is lit until all eight glow brightly.
- Sharing festive foods: Traditional treats like latkes (potato pancakes) and sufganiyot (jelly doughnuts) are enjoyed with family and friends.
- Playing dreidel: A simple spinning-top game that’s fun for all ages and full of symbolism.
